Hyderabad: Telangana is all set to host India’s biggest floating solar power plant with a capacity of 100 MW. The project expected to be opened in May, is being set up at Ramagundam thermal power plant reservoir near Peddapalli district.
The solar project is commissioned by the energy conglomerate National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC).
The solar project which is estimated to cost around Rs 423 cr will have 4.5 lakh photovoltaic panels. The solar panels will cover 450-acre area of the reservoir and can be expanded in the future, according to a report in Times of India.
NTPC’s efforts to set up floating solar power projects are being aimed at reducing its carbon footprints and accelerate its green energy production to 30 per cent of its capacity.
Citing sources in the Maharatna company, the report suggested that NTPC is planning to emulate floating solar projects across all thermal power plants in the country.
“These floating solar projects are coming up at Ramagundam power project (100 MW), which will be single location largest floating solar plant in the country as of now; 92 MW floating unit at Kayamkulam gas plant in Kerala and a 25 MW unit at Simhadri power plant. In addition, we are setting up a 230 MW ground-mounted solar power plant in Ettayapuram near Tuticorin in Tamil Nadu by next year,” a report in Hindu Businessline quoted CV Anand, Executive Director, NTPC Southern Region as saying.
World’s largest solar plant
The world’s largest solar power plant with 600 MW capacity is being set up on Omkareshwar Dam on Narmada river in Madhya Pradesh. The project costing Rs 3,000 cr is expected to start power generation only by 2022-23.

South Korea is building the largest dam-based floating solar power plant in the world with a capacity of 41MW. The project will be set up at Hapcheon dam.
